Mini Muscle? not quite…
Well, I just got my Intel Mac Mini with a Dual Core processor. I self upgraded it to 2GBs of RAM and decided to run our usual horsepower test. How long does it take to process a Leaf 22mpx DNG into an 8 Bit TIF via ACR? This is one of our most common tasks, and every second counts. On our normal processing machine(Dual 2.7 G5, 8GB RAM, and SATA RAID 3 XL) this takes about 6 seconds. On the Intel Mac Mini Dual Core 1.66 with 2GB RAM and 5400rpm 2.5″ laptop hardrive, this takes 38 seconds. So, if you were going to buy a Mini with the hopes of it becoming a capture machine, you would be a bit disapointed, until of course that mystical Universal Binary comes out. But everything else is smoking and general PShoping is actually quite speedy.

Great site guys, keep the content coming. Can you tell me if the sata interface on the mini is inter-changeable with 3.5 sata.

Technically it is interchangable. However, because the connector is molded into the hard drive mounting bracket, you would have to custom hack a cable to get things to work. I’m trying to find an adaptor right now, but I’ve run out of luck so far. Oh, you would also have to have an external power supply for the drive, but that isn’t a deal breaker.

[...] I stumbled upon this entry, Death to Film’s Mini Muscle? not quite… (if you get a 404 with that link, just click here, someone seems to have messed up the links from the main page over there now…). The author goes on saying that after buying a Mac Mini Dual Core 1.66GHz with 2GB RAM, one of his usual tests in Photoshop takes up a little over 6 times what his Dual G5 takes to perform the same task. Of course, Photoshop does run under Rosetta, though… Well, I just got my Intel Mac Mini with a Dual Core processor. I self upgraded it to 2GBs of RAM and decided to run our usual horsepower test. The 404s have been fixed. The odd thing was that you found the site in the 5 minute window where I was installing the Permalink Redirect plugin. Weird… Glad you liked the comparison though.
